Neuropsychology — ProfessMed Gdańsk

Assessment of cognitive functioning, diagnosis of memory disorders, and disorders of the brain’s executive functions.

The study of the relationship between the brain and behavior, as well as cognitive and emotional functioning.

Clinical neuropsychology is a medical and psychological specialty focused on studying the relationship between the brain and behavior, as well as cognitive and emotional functioning.

Neuropsychology focuses in particular on the assessment of cognitive functioning. Most patients commonly refer to this as “memory testing.” However, a neuropsychological evaluation is a much broader area of diagnostics. In addition to assessing memory functions, it also includes the evaluation of domains such as attention, concentration, language functions, visuospatial abilities, executive functions, emotional state, and information processing speed.

Neuropsychological testing allows us to determine whether the brain is functioning within the normal range for a person’s age or whether the decline in cognitive performance is due to an underlying medical condition. It assesses which cognitive processes have been affected and to what extent as a result of illness or brain injury.

A neuropsychological assessment is a functional evaluation of the brain. Imaging studies, such as MRI or CT scans, assess its structure. Both types of examinations should be performed together, as they complement one another.

When to schedule a consultation with a neuropsychologist

Our Diagnostic Approach

At our facility, we use only scientifically validated diagnostic methods. A distinguishing feature of our practice is our use of modern diagnostic approaches, including computerized diagnostic methods, to ensure the highest possible reliability of results. We do not use standardized diagnostic templates—the type of assessment and the techniques employed are always selected individually to address each patient’s specific concerns. We strive to offer prompt appointment times, and results are typically provided within 1–2 days.

Frequently asked questions

When is it worth scheduling a neuropsychological consultation?
A neuropsychological consultation is recommended for problems with memory, concentration, or other cognitive functions; when neurodegenerative diseases are suspected (e.g., Alzheimer’s disease); after strokes or head injuries; in the course of multiple sclerosis; as well as in cases of depression and anxiety.
What does a neuropsychological assessment involve?
A neuropsychological assessment is a functional evaluation of the brain—it includes tests of memory, attention, concentration, language, visuospatial, and executive functions. It helps determine whether cognitive performance falls within the normal range for a person’s age or whether it may be related to an underlying medical condition. The type of assessment is selected individually.
How is a neuropsychological assessment different from an MRI scan?
A neuropsychological assessment is a functional evaluation—it assesses how the brain works. Imaging studies (MRI, CT scan) are structural evaluations—they show the brain’s anatomy. Both types of assessments complement each other and should often be performed in parallel.
How should I prepare for a neuropsychological assessment?
It is advisable to bring the results of any imaging tests (MRI, CT), neurological records, and a list of medications you are taking. Rest is recommended before the assessment, as the results are most reliable when the patient is well rested.
Do I need a referral to see a neuropsychologist at ProfessMed?
No. ProfessMed is a private clinic and does not require a referral. You can schedule an appointment via ZnanyLekarz or by phone at +48 58 380 24 25.
