When Should You See a Neurologist for a Headache?

Most headaches are tension-type, but certain warning signs should prompt a specialist consultation. Here’s what to watch for.

Headache is one of the most common complaints reported by patients. In the vast majority of cases, it is tension-type or migraine-related and does not require urgent neurological intervention.

There are, however, situations in which a neurological consultation is recommended: a sudden, very severe headache unlike any you have experienced before, headaches that gradually worsen over the course of weeks, headaches accompanied by visual, speech, or sensory disturbances, as well as headaches occurring for the first time after the age of 50.

During the consultation, the neurologist conducts a detailed interview about the nature, frequency, and circumstances of the pain. Based on the neurological examination and, if necessary, additional tests, they establish the diagnosis and treatment plan.

Keeping a headache diary is worthwhile—information about the frequency, severity, and accompanying circumstances helps your doctor make an accurate diagnosis.
