Intelligence assessment (IQ test) — psychological assessment of cognitive abilities

An intelligence assessment is a standardized psychological evaluation that determines your overall level of intellectual ability and your profile of cognitive abilities — including reasoning, working memory, verbal comprehension and processing speed.

About the problem

The assessment is carried out by a psychologist using professional, standardized tests. The result is compared with norms for the relevant age group.

Besides the overall score, the assessment shows the strengths and weaker areas of your cognitive functioning. Such a profile can be helpful when planning education, work or further diagnosis.

An intelligence assessment can also be part of a broader psychological or neuropsychological evaluation, e.g. for difficulties with concentration or memory, or in ADHD diagnosis.

Most common symptoms

  • difficulties at school or work whose cause is unclear
  • a need for an objective assessment of cognitive abilities
  • questions about the strengths and weaker areas of intellectual functioning
  • a need for the result as part of a broader psychological assessment

When to see a doctor

  • when you are planning important educational or career decisions and want to know your cognitive profile
  • when difficulties at school or work persist despite your efforts
  • when a specialist has recommended an assessment of cognitive function
  • when you want to complement another assessment, e.g. for ADHD
