Neurosurgeon Gdańsk — neurosurgical consultations and spinal pain treatment
Diagnosis and surgical treatment of disorders of the nervous system—the brain, spinal cord, and peripheral nerves.
At ProfessMed, we provide neurosurgical consultations for diseases of the spine, spinal cord, brain and peripheral nerves. The neurosurgeon assesses whether the problem can be treated conservatively or requires further diagnostics or an assessment of eligibility for a procedure.
Neurosurgery is a field of medicine concerned with the diagnosis and surgical treatment of diseases of the nervous system — the brain, spinal cord, peripheral nerves and the blood vessels that supply them. In outpatient practice, most consultations concern spinal conditions: spinal disc disease, spinal canal stenosis, spondylolisthesis and radicular pain.
Not every case of spinal pain requires surgery. During the consultation, the neurosurgeon reviews your symptoms and imaging results, assesses whether your symptoms are caused by pressure on the nerves or spinal cord, and discusses possible management: conservative treatment, rehabilitation, pain-relief procedures or eligibility for surgical treatment. Neurosurgical consultation — 350 zł.
What problems can you see a neurosurgeon about?
The neurosurgeon consults patients with diseases of the spine and nervous system — both before a treatment decision is made and after previous procedures.
Spine
- Spinal disc disease and intervertebral disc herniation
- Sciatica and other radicular pain
- Spinal canal stenosis
- Spondylolisthesis
- Degenerative changes of the spine
- Spinal injuries
Neurological symptoms
- Numbness, tingling or weakness in the limbs
- Pain radiating to the arm or leg
- Chronic neck and back pain
Brain and spinal cord
- Brain and spinal cord tumors
- Aneurysms and angiomas
- Conditions following head injuries
During the consultation, the neurosurgeon assesses your symptoms and test results and recommends the next steps.
Ultrasound-guided spinal pain-relief block
For selected patients with spinal pain, especially radicular pain, the neurosurgeon may suggest a pain-relief block — an injection of medication near a nerve or joint under ultrasound guidance. The aim is to reduce pain and inflammation, which makes rehabilitation easier. The doctor decides whether it is indicated after the consultation and a review of imaging studies.
- Ultrasound-guided spinal pain-relief block — 1500 zł
How the neurosurgical consultation works
- 1. History and examination — the doctor asks about the nature and duration of your symptoms and assesses muscle strength, sensation and reflexes.
- 2. Review of imaging studies — the neurosurgeon assesses MRI or CT results and orders new tests if needed.
- 3. Plan for further management — the doctor discusses conservative, interventional and surgical treatment options and sets out the next steps.
When should you seek help urgently?
Some symptoms require immediate help rather than a scheduled consultation:
- sudden loss of muscle strength in a leg or arm
- problems passing urine or stool together with spinal pain
- numbness in the perineal area
- a sudden, very severe headache
In such situations, go to the emergency department without delay or call for help (112).
Frequently asked questions
- When is it worth scheduling an appointment with a neurosurgeon?
- It is worth seeing a neurosurgeon if you have spinal pain radiating to the limbs, numbness or weakness in the arms or legs, or diagnosed spinal disc disease, spinal canal stenosis or spondylolisthesis, as well as for an assessment of brain or spinal cord abnormalities detected on imaging.
- Neurosurgeon vs. neurolog — what’s the difference?
- A neurolog diagnoses and treats disorders of the nervous system using conservative methods such as pharmacotherapy and rehabilitation. A neurosurgeon specializes in surgical treatment, including herniated discs, brain tumors, and injuries. The two specialties complement each other and often require close collaboration.
- Does every case of spinal disc disease require surgery?
- No. Most patients with spinal disc disease are treated conservatively — with medication, rehabilitation or pain-relief procedures. Surgical treatment is considered, among other situations, when neurological symptoms are getting worse or when pain persists despite treatment.
- How should I prepare for a visit with a neurosurgeon?
- It is worth bringing your imaging test results (MRI, CT scan), neurological test results (EEG, EMG), records from previous consultations, and a list of medications you are currently taking.
- Do I need a referral to see a neurosurgeon at ProfessMed?
- No. ProfessMed is a private specialist medical facility and does not require a referral. You can book an appointment directly through ZnanyLekarz or by phone: +48 58 380 24 25.
- How much does a neurosurgical consultation cost at ProfessMed?
- A neurosurgical consultation costs 350 zł. An ultrasound-guided spinal pain-relief block costs 1500 zł — the doctor decides during the consultation whether it is appropriate.
