Ultrasound-guided spinal pain block

A pain block is an injection of a local anesthetic, often together with an anti-inflammatory medicine, near the spinal nerve or joint that is the source of the pain. Performing the procedure under ultrasound guidance allows the injection site to be seen precisely.

A pain block is an injection of a local anesthetic, often together with an anti-inflammatory medicine, near the spinal nerve or joint that is the source of the pain. Performing the procedure under ultrasound guidance allows the injection site to be seen precisely.

About the problem

A block may be considered, among other situations, for radicular pain (e.g. sciatica) and pain coming from the spinal joints, when symptoms persist despite conservative treatment.

The aim of the procedure is to reduce pain and inflammation, which makes rehabilitation and a return to activity easier. A block does not remove the cause of the symptoms — it is part of a broader treatment plan.

Qualification takes place during a neurosurgical consultation, based on an examination and imaging results, most often an MRI.

Most common symptoms

  • back pain radiating to the buttock, leg or arm
  • pain that worsens when sitting, coughing or changing position
  • numbness or tingling in a limb
  • chronic neck or lower back pain that makes sleep and work difficult

When to see a doctor

  • when radicular pain persists despite medication and physiotherapy
  • when pain makes rehabilitation or daily functioning difficult
  • when you have MRI results and want to discuss further treatment
  • urgently — with sudden leg weakness, problems passing urine or stool, or numbness in the perineal (saddle) area
