What does a rheumatology consultation look like?
The appointment begins with a discussion of your symptoms, how they have progressed, and any coexisting conditions. The doctor then performs a joint examination and clinical assessment and, based on your symptoms, may order additional tests, including blood work, inflammatory markers, and imaging studies. Based on these findings, the doctor establishes a diagnosis and recommends a treatment plan or further diagnostic evaluation. It is a good idea to bring the results of any previous tests and a list of medications you are currently taking.
Symptoms You Should Not Ignore
- Pain, swelling, or redness in the joints lasting longer than a few days
- Morning joint stiffness lasting more than 30 minutes
- Recurring joint pain, including after rest or at night
- Weakness, chronic fatigue, low-grade fever without a clear cause
- Sudden, very severe pain and swelling in a single joint (e.g., the big toe)
