About the problem
The problem often recurs, especially when nails are cut too short or rounded at the edges, and when shoes are too tight.
If the problem is long-standing or keeps coming back, the surgeon assesses whether a procedure is indicated.
Most common symptoms
- pain along the edge of the nail, worse with pressure and walking
- redness and swelling of the nail fold
- oozing or pus
- overgrown tissue at the edge of the nail
- recurring inflammation
When to see a doctor
- when pain and redness do not go away
- when pus or oozing appears
- when the problem keeps coming back
- when the symptoms make walking or wearing shoes difficult
- earlier — if you have diabetes or circulation problems
